Is Runtz Cake indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

Runtz Cake is a hybrid of Wedding Cake and White Runtz; Leafly rates it mostly calming, Weedmaps calls it indica-dominant and AllBud an even 50/50.1,2,3 Who made the cross is disputed: Leafly says the original breeder is unknown, while Weedmaps credits Farmer and the Felon in California.1,2

Parents and offspring as reported by Leafly and Weedmaps; White Runtz’s own parentage is disputed.1,2,4,5,6,7

The two parents

Wedding Cake, also known as Triangle Mints #23 and Pink Cookies, is an indica-leaning hybrid of Triangle Kush and Animal Mints, according to Leafly.8 It was Leafly’s 2019 Strain of the Year, the first for its breeder, Seed Junky, and Leafly calls it “the strain that started the cake craze”.9,10

White Runtz is a hybrid that Leafly lists as Gelato × Zkittlez and describes as noted for striking white trichomes that make its buds look white like snow.4 That is the same pairing as Runtz, which Leafly says was made by Cookies Fam, popularized by the Runtz crew from Long Beach and named its Strain of the Year in 2020.11

Which White Runtz?

Sources agree on Wedding Cake but tell White Runtz’s story in more than one way, so Runtz Cake’s second parent is less settled than its first.4,5,10

Leafly lists The Original Z (Zkittlez) as White Runtz’s parent and White Runtz among its children.13

Who bred it? Two accounts

Leafly says the original breeder of Runtz Cake is unknown; Weedmaps says Runtz Cake comes from Farmer and the Felon in California.1,2 Leafly’s profile of Farmer and the Felon, a California brand, is no longer actively maintained and does not list a Runtz Cake product, and the brand’s own site could not be reached, so we do not pick between the two accounts.14

The two strains Leafly lists as bred from Runtz Cake come from another California breeder, Purple Caper Seeds, which says it breeds for licensed farms in the state; neither Leafly page credits Purple Caper with Runtz Cake itself.6,7,15

How indica is it?

Labels disagree. Leafly files Runtz Cake as a hybrid whose effects are more calming than energizing, Weedmaps calls it an indica-dominant hybrid, and AllBud and GrowDiaries call it evenly balanced, 50% indica and 50% sativa in AllBud’s figure.1,2,3,16 Its parents lean the calming way on Leafly, which describes Wedding Cake as an indica-hybrid and rates White Runtz mostly calming, and Leafly lists both of Purple Caper’s Runtz Cake crosses as 60% indica.4,6,7,8

Seeds, clones and our lab data

Weedmaps says Runtz Cake is not available as seeds or clones, and GrowDiaries lists no seed products for it.2,16 Its parents are sold as seed: SeedFinder lists 22 breeders’ versions of Wedding Cake and seven of White Runtz, and Weedmaps says most seed versions of White Runtz follow the Gelato × Zkittlez account, some simply recreating the name with their own selections rather than tracing to the original clone.5,17,18

Our lab data cannot settle any of this. All 51 matched tests come from one Washington producer and one lab, so they describe one grower’s plants, whatever their lineage.19

Runtz Cake, Runtz Layer Cake and Ice Cream Runtz

Three menu names mix Wedding Cake and Runtz genetics in different ways. Runtz Cake is Wedding Cake × White Runtz.1 Runtz × Layer Cake, a Barney’s Farm seed strain, crosses Runtz (Zkittlez × Gelato) with Layer Cake, which Barney’s gives as (Wedding Cake × GMO) × (Cookies Kush × Skunk #1) and Leafly lists as a Swamp Boys Seeds cross of Wedding Cake, GMO, Triangle Kush and Skunk.20,21 Weedmaps lists Ice Cream Runtz as Ice Cream Cake × Runtz, and Ice Cream Cake is itself Wedding Cake × Gelato #33.22,23 All three carry Wedding Cake and Runtz-family genetics, but they are different crosses.1,20,22

These are the only two offspring we could verify; Leafly lists both in Runtz Cake’s family tree.1 Leafly lists Ice Cream Cake and LA Kush Cake among Wedding Cake’s children, making them Runtz Cake’s half-siblings; Wedding Cake, Ice Cream Cake and LA Kush Cake each have their own guide in the Official Cannabis network (weddingcakestrain.com, icecreamcakestrain.com, lakushcake.com).8
